Discord is a cross-platform communication platform that is popular among gamers and communities. It was founded in 2015 by Jason Citron, a former CEO of the mobile gaming company OpenFeint.

Discord allows users to create and join “servers,” which are essentially virtual chat rooms where users can communicate through text, voice, and video. Users can also create “channels” within servers to organize different types of conversations.

Discord also offers a number of features to help users manage their servers and communities, including custom roles and permissions, integrations with other tools, and the ability to use bots.

To use Discord, users must download the app and create an account. They can then join or create servers and participate in conversations. Discord is available on desktop and mobile devices, and users can access it through a web browser as well.

Discord is free to use, but it also offers a paid subscription service called “Nitro,” which provides users with additional features such as higher-quality screen sharing and the ability to use custom emojis.

Here is a tutorial on how to use Discord for your business:

  1. Create a Discord server: The first step in using Discord for your business is to create a server. This is essentially a virtual chat room where you can communicate with your team and customers. To create a server, you will need to download the Discord app and create an account. Once you have an account, you can create a server by clicking the “+” icon in the left-hand sidebar and selecting “Create a Server.”
  2. Invite members to your server: Once you have created a server, you can invite people to join. To do this, click on the server name in the left-hand sidebar, then click the “Invite People” button. This will generate a unique link that you can share with anyone you want to invite to your server.
  3. Set up channels: Channels are like sub-groups within your server, and they can be used to organize different types of conversations. For example, you might have a “general” channel for general discussions, a “sales” channel for discussing sales and marketing and a “support” channel for customer support inquiries. To create a channel, click the “+” icon in the left-hand sidebar and select “Create a Channel.”
  4. Customize your server: You can customize your server by adding a logo, setting a color scheme, and creating custom roles and permissions. To do this, click on the server name in the left-hand sidebar, then click the “Server Settings” button.
  5. Use voice and video chat: Discord also offers voice and video chat capabilities, which can be useful for remote team meetings or customer support calls. To start a voice or video chat, click the “Join a Voice Channel” button in the left-hand sidebar, then select the channel you want to join.
  6. Integrate with other tools: Discord can be integrated with a number of other tools, such as Trello, Asana, and Google Drive, to help you manage your business. To integrate with these tools, click on the server name in the left-hand sidebar, then click the “Server Settings” button. From there, you can access the “Integrations” tab to set up the integrations you want to use.
  7. Use bots: Discord allows you to use bots, which are automated programs that can perform various tasks within your server. For example, you might use a bot to welcome new members, announce updates, or provide customer support. To use a bot, you will need to invite it to your server and give it the necessary permissions.

By following these steps, you can effectively use Discord for your business to communicate with your team and customers, organize conversations, and manage your business more efficiently.

Why is Discord better than other chat apps?

Discord is a communication platform that is popular among gamers and communities, while chat apps are more general-purpose communication tools that are used for messaging and connecting with individuals or groups. Here are some key differences between Discord and chat apps:

  • Server-based vs. peer-to-peer: Discord is based on servers, which are essentially virtual chat rooms that users can join or create. Chat apps, on the other hand, are typically based on peer-to-peer connections, which means that users communicate directly with each other rather than through a central server.
  • Voice and video chat: Discord has built-in voice and video chat capabilities, which makes it a good option for real-time communication. Chat apps generally do not offer voice or video chat, though some may have integrations with other tools that allow for this.
  • Customization: Discord allows users to customize their servers and channels in various ways, including setting roles and permissions, adding integrations, and using bots. Chat apps generally do not offer this level of customization.
  • Communities: Discord is designed to foster communities, and it is often used by gaming groups, guilds, and other communities to stay connected and collaborate. Chat apps are generally more focused on individual communication and do not have the same community-building features.

Ultimately, whether Discord or a chat app is the better option for your business will depend on your specific needs and goals. If you are looking for a platform to support real-time communication, community building, and customization, Discord may be a good choice. If you simply need a way to send messages and connect with individuals or small groups, a chat app may be more suitable.
